Shot blasting — or cleaning blasting — uses the high-velocity projection of an abrasive (steel shot, corundum, ceramic beads) by a centrifugal wheel or air jet to clean, strip or prepare a surface. Unlike shot peening, the goal is not to generate controlled residual stresses but to achieve a defined surface condition (cleanliness, roughness, adhesion).

Cleanliness references are SSPC-SP (Society for Protective Coatings) and ISO 8501-1 (Preparation of steel substrates), with Sa 1 to Sa 3 grades depending on the requirement.
