Training objectives

Shot blasting training (stripping blast) per SSPC-SP, ISO 8501 and AMS 2431 for the media. 2-day program — surface preparation before painting, coating, inspection. Aimed at booth operators and steelwork / boiler-making / OEM preparators.

Covers grades SA 2, SA 2½, SA 3 (ISO 8501) and classes SSPC-SP 6, SP 10, SP 5. Note: shot blasting ≠ shot peening (stripping vs controlled pre-stress — the distinction is covered in depth).

Detailed curriculum

Day 1 — Standards and surface preparation

SSPC-SP 1 through 10, ISO 8501 SA grades. Roughness profile (ISO 8503). AMS 2431 abrasive media classes. Shot blasting vs shot peening distinction.

Day 2 — Booth practice and inspection

Blasting booth operation. Pressure, distance, angle settings. Inspection: ISO 8501 comparator, roughness gauge, tape test. Operator attestation.

Prerequisites

▸ Shop or field experience (minimum 1 year)
▸ Surface-treatment knowledge desirable
▸ Fit for full PPE use (abrasive dust)

Frequently asked questions

Can a shot blaster do shot peening?+

Not without requalification. The objectives (stripping vs controlled pre-stress) and the inspections (visual vs Almen/coverage) are different. A dedicated shot-peening training is required for critical processes.

What is the difference between ISO 8501 and SSPC-SP?+

Equivalent standards (European vs American). SA 2½ ≈ SP 10 (near-white metal). We teach both standards depending on the trainee's market.
