Training objectives

Training dedicated to automatic and manual shot peening according to AMS 2430, SAE J442 and SAE J443. 4-day programme — theory of shot peening, mastery of Almen intensity, coverage, media, execution and quality inspections. For operators and quality technicians of OEMs and subcontractors in aerospace, engines and landing gear.

Qualification compliant with SAE J2277 level 2, recognised by the main OEMs (Airbus, Boeing, Safran, Dassault, Rolls-Royce). Alternating theory (1.5 days) and supervised practice on pressure and turbine cabinets (2.5 days).

Detailed curriculum

Day 1 — Shot peening principles and standards

Theory of residual stresses, fatigue, improvement mechanisms. AMS 2430, SAE J442, SAE J443. OEM specifications (Airbus AIPS, Boeing BAC, Safran). Operator responsibilities.

Day 2 — Almen intensity and coverage

Saturation curve build-up, N/A/C strips, Almen indicator calibration. Coverage measurement (visual, PeenScan, colorimetry). Hands-on exercises on strips.

Day 3 — Media, equipment, cabinet practice

AMS 2431: granulometry, hardness, batch traceability. Pressure vs turbine cabinets, nozzles, control. Full process execution on pilot part.

Day 4 — Assessment and qualification

Autonomous practice on test part. Theoretical assessment (MCQ) + practical (full execution, intensity/coverage inspections). Award of Kronos level 2 certificate.

Prerequisites

▸ Industrial experience of at least 2 years (workshop, MRO, production)
▸ Basic mechanical drawing reading skills
▸ Notions of stress and fatigue (mechanical technical diploma or equivalent experience)
▸ Ability to wear full PPE (helmet, goggles, gloves, coveralls)

▸ Kronos Engineering shot peening level 2 SAE J2277 certificate
▸ Operator handbook (procedures, safety sheets, inspection checklist)

Frequently asked questions

Does this training cover manual and automatic shot peening?+

Yes. Both configurations are covered: automatic pressure/turbine cabinets for series production and large parts, manual nozzles for local touch-up and MRO. Parameter setting, execution and inspections are presented for each case.

Is the training accepted by Airbus and Safran?+

The Kronos SAE J2277 level 2 certificate is the initial educational building block recognised by the main OEMs. The final operator qualification must be formalised by your employer according to their NADCAP documentation (on-site practical records).
