Training objectives

Flapper peening training according to AMS 2432 and ABP 1-4006, dedicated to line maintenance and aerospace MRO operators. 2-day programme — manual portable peening process for structural touch-up, areas inaccessible to cabinets, AOG interventions.

Qualification compliant with SAE J2277 for the flapper process. Typical applications: rework after structural repair, local hole treatment, confined fuselage areas, leading edges.

Detailed curriculum

Day 1 — Flapper peening theory and parameter setting

Principle of the rotary portable tool, Almen intensity in flapper configuration, AMS 2432 and ABP 1-4006 specifications. Flapper media (shot attached flap). Operator safety.

Day 2 — Practice and qualification

Execution on representative MRO pilot parts (aluminium structure, titanium). Intensity/coverage inspections. Assessment + award of flapper peening certificate.

Prerequisites

▸ MRO or line maintenance experience (minimum 1 year)
▸ Manufacturer structural works authorisation desirable
▸ Ability to wear PPE suitable for confined-space work

Deliverables

▸ Kronos flapper peening level 2 SAE J2277 certificate
▸ Flapper procedure handbook (parameters by material, inspections, limits)

Frequently asked questions

Does flapper peening replace cabinet shot peening?+

No. Flapper is a local touch-up process — inaccessible areas, AOG interventions, post-repair rework. For series production or large parts, the cabinet remains the reference.

Can flapper be performed on Inconel or titanium?+

Yes, the training covers parameters for aluminium, titanium and superalloys. The application limits (achievable intensity, geometry) are detailed according to AMS 2432.
